I’ve mined these letters from American comics from the 1950s

a brief bit of research revealed to me that Valentine's Day has been associated with lovers for longer than I’d thought: apparently the first surviving romantic reference to St Valentine's Day was made by Geoffrey Chaucer in the late 14th century

but transferred to the picture-strip Victor when it launched

or stencil (which is the case here - screenprints are made using screen stencils) that has been created by the artist for the purpose of producing the image
