The N terminal and the C terminal portions of this enzyme contain lysine ketoglutarate reductase and saccharopine dehydrogenase activity, respectively, resulting in the conversion of lysine to alpha aminoadipic semialdehyde. Mutations in AASS are associated with familial hyperlysinemia.
